Moon Young Kim Joins Center for the Study of Space Crime, Piracy, and Governance as Fellow for Asia Research

Research focus will include piracy and organized criminal activities in space by actors in the Indo-Pacific region
LOS ANGELES - October 8, 2024 - The Center for the Study of Space Crime, Piracy, and Governance (CSCPG), an independent, nonpartisan think tank, today announced that Moon Young Kim has joined the organization as a Fellow focusing on Asia research. Kim's research interests focus on the intersection of human factors, cybersecurity, and the Indo-Pacific region, including piracy and criminal activities in space by Asian actors.

"We are delighted that Moon Young will be working with us on research regarding the potential for space crime and piracy in Asia," said Marc Feldman, Executive Director of CSCPG and co-author of the upcoming book Space Piracy: Preparing for a Criminal Crisis in Orbit [https://a.co/d/6jP3gPg] (Wiley, 2025). "Our goal is to drive important policy dialogues related to irregular threats to American space assets - a sphere in which Asia tends not to get the kind of attention it deserves. We believe Moon Young will be able to make a significant contribution to these efforts."

Moon Young recently served as a consultant to the Center for New American Security's (CNAS) Technology and National Security Program. Prior to taking a ten-year caregiving break, she was an Adjunct Fellow for CNAS' Indo-Pacific Security Program, focusing on the North Korea threat. She also served as a Research Associate for the East Asia Program at the Stimson Center, as well as a Graduate Associate for the Korea Institute.

"I am excited to be working with the CSCPG team and to contribute novel research regarding the space domain," said Moon Young.

Moon Young is currently a PhD candidate in Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia. She also possesses master's degrees in systems engineering from the University of Virginia and in East Asian Languages & Civilizations from Harvard University. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Diplomatic History from the University of Pennsylvania.
