Press release from: Rosatom Asia

On September 10 the foundation stone ceremony was held on the construction site of Bushehr nuclear power plant Phase II. The plant is being built in the framework of the Russian-Iranian cooperation. The contract provides for construction of two power units of Bushehr NPP (Units 2 and 3).
The Russian delegation was headed by CEO of ROSATOM Sergey Kirienko. The ceremony was attended by President of the Group of Companies ASE Valery Limarenko. On the Iranian side the ceremony was attended by First Vice-President of Iran Eshaq Jahangiri and Vice-President of the country and President of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi.
First power unit of Bushehr NPP was connected to the national grid of Iran on September 3, 2011. This power plant was built with the Russian assistance and became the first NPP in the Middle East region.
Nuclear Power Production and Development Company of Iran (NPPD) and JSC Atomstroyexport (JSC ASE) signed contracts for construction of Units 2 and 3 of Bushehr Phase II on EPC turn-key terms in November 2014. Total power capacity of two VVER-1000 reactors should be 2,100 MW. JSC ASE is the principle contractor of Bushehr Phase II. The plant will be built to the new design of Generation III+. The design was certified by EUR (European Utility Requirements). Bushehr Phase II will employ unique technologies and cutting-edge solutions, as well as new safety concept. The Russian and Iranian parties have started working on this project on September 10.
Sergey Kirienko commented on the event: “Construction of Bushehr Phase I proved that Russia always fulfills its obligations before foreign partners irrespectively of the political climate in the world. Phase II of this project is the practical contribution of ROSATOM to the broadening of the Russian-Iranian cooperation and, at the same time, a serious move to strengthen Russia’s positions in the global market of civil nuclear technologies in a promising micro-region such as Middle East.”
According to Valery Limarenko, Unit 1 of Bushehr NPP is a unique facility with no rivals in the world. He said: “We have managed to integrate Russian equipment into buildings made earlier to the German project. This success was achieved owing to professionalism and devotion of Russian and Iranian specialists who worked and continue working to implement the project of Iran’s first nuclear power plant. Today we start building Bushehr Phase II. I am sure we are awaited by the joint success in working on this project”.

ROSATOM is the Russian Federation national nuclear corporation bringing together circa 400 nuclear companies and R&D institutions that operate in the civilian and defense sectors. With 70 years' expertise in the nuclear field, we are a global leader in technologies and competencies offering cutting-edge industry solutions.
