Building Across Worlds - International Projects by Architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partner
The Hamburg-based architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partner, also known as gmp, belong to the internationally most recognised architecture offices. From single-family homes to master plans, gmp has realised some 400 projects worldwide - many of them built in Asia. But how does one build in other cultural environments and on the proper scales in, for example, China or Vietnam? How much knowledge from the European construction practice can be transferred - and how do construction projects in their sociologically and culturally familiar settings benefit from the experience gained there? The new title Building Across Worlds. International Projects by Architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partner, from the Edition DETAIL series, mainly presents current projects by gmp. Unlike the usual retrospectives on renowned architects, however, these are not presented in an isolated manner. Instead, well-known authors correlate two or more buildings according to a specifically defined subject or typology. This leads to such projects as the Kunsthalle Mannheim in Germany being compared with Vietnam's Hanoi National Museum, BerlinBrandenburg Airport with the Tianjin West Railway Station in China. Common features and differences are thus presented, but also evolutions in design, features specific to the respective countries or locations, questions on the appropriateness of scale as well as cultural distinctions. Furthermore, the topic of co-operation and collaboration with clients and specialised planners is raised on several occasions. Last but not least, the authors also discuss the political and sociological dimensions as well as the urban context of the individual projects. After all, it is the architects of gmp themselves who set the aspiration of designing their buildings according to the functional circumstances and the special identity of the respective location: the holistic approach takes centre stage.
This extract from the gmp portfolio grants a special insight into 50 years of development of the office and shows that gmp's architecture is developed within a permanent learning process.

Flying Panels. How Concrete Panels Changed the World
During the second half of the twentieth century countless concrete panels sailed through the skies: not only physically from factory to construction site, or from country to country, but also figuratively. The flying concrete panel could be found all over the world in countless pictures, on posters, in cartoons and movies and even as toys or theatre and opera sets. Their symbolism made them an emblem for the promise of…

Mass Housing in the Socialist City. Heritage, Values, and Perspectives
Prefabricated mass housing in cities from formerly socialist countries represents an enormous volume of residential housing today and is therefore an important tool for the future urban development within these cities. But transformation of these districts is needed due to the functional, societal, and technical challenges that they face. How can these - sometimes gigantic - structures from the 1960s and 70s be adapted to today's needs? How can a…

BUILDING SYSTEMS INTEGRATION AND BUILDING INTREGRATED SOLAR SYSTEMS
Optimizing energy performance in buildings requires an integrated approach to building systems design, analysis and implementation. Building-integrated Solar Systems (BISS) is an increasingly popular approach for using the building skin as a means to harvest solar energy.
More recent techniques involve systems of lighting, lighting controls, sensors and shading devices all integrated with the building skin, and in turn integrated with the building HVAC systems. Such design strategies can reduce heat…
