JMA Pilani Rajasthan Celebrates National Sports Day

Sports give us a sense of identity and national pride. The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on August 29 every year. This day marks the birthday of Dhyan Chand, the hockey player who won gold medals in Olympics for India in the years 1928,1932 and 1936.

His real name was Dhyan Singh, but since he used to practise at night only in moonlight — floodlight would come to India much later, and to hockey even later — his friends and colleagues gave him the name "Chand," meaning moon.

The President of India gives away prestigious sports awards – Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award on this day at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, India to sports achievers and coaches across various sporting fields.

To highlight the importance of this day and to attract the mass attention, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry FICCI, Fitness365 and All India Council Of Physical Education AICPE have been encouraging Schools, Colleges, Universities, Corporate and Communities to go out and play at least one sport or do any fitness drills / physical activities on 29th Aug.

Smt Jamuna Mishra Academy JMA Pilani participated in this event by organizing various sporting events which included various running races, relays, volleyball matches and badminton matches among students. The day started with the hoisting of the school flag followed by administration of the oath by Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan to all students.

The principal urged the students to take inspiration from various sporting greats like shuttler PV Sindhu, wrestler Sakshi Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, shooter Jitu Rai etc and become dreamers performers and achievers. The enthusiasm was so much to the extent that many students wanted last Saturday of every month to be declared as Sports Day.
