With their high-performance materials, sandwich panels make a significant contribution to fire and noise protection as well as energy efficiency, sustainability and aesthetics. The requirement for sandwich bonding is always the same: a stable, durable composite material must be created from three or more structural components. This usually involves two thin metal cover layers and a core of polyurethane foam or mineral wool. But there are many other composite constructions. Depending on the intended use, insulating, stabilizing, weight-saving, sound-absorbing, environmentally friendly or sustainable materials are used. With the innovative adhesive systems from RUDERER KLEBETECHNIK GmbH, these requirements can be met so that the material mix between the top and core layers has excellent dimensional stability.
In demand: stability, flexibility and durability
Bonding sandwich panels is a constant balancing act between increasing stability and reducing weight, different joining dynamics and temperature expansion coefficients. Sandwich panels, which are used as side walls in vehicles, cabins or truck bodies, have to withstand wind and weather and dynamic loads. Different adhesives are required depending on the area of application and the material used. The outer skin of a sandwich element usually consists of steel and thin sheet in combination with highly cross-linked plastics (duromers) or fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP). To reduce weight (lightweight construction) and improve insulation (e.g. in truck refrigerated boxes), an inner layer often consisting of foamed plastics or insulating materials (e.g. Styropor® or Styrodur®) is bonded between the outer layers.
Managing the material mix: high-performance adhesives
RUDERER KLEBETECHNIK GmbH offers aqueous systems such as dispersions, solvent-based contact adhesives and reactive 1- and 2-component adhesives for bonding sandwich panels. If the sandwich element has a load-bearing function, such as in truck bodies, foaming 1-component PU adhesives such as the technicoll® 8324 PU adhesive are generally used. 1-component adhesives react with moisture from the environment, penetrate the foam material of the core layer, fill the cavities and thus improve the strength of the entire sandwich. Reactive 2-component adhesives such as the high-performance adhesive technicoll® 8301/8302 are better for sandwich elements made of materials that are impermeable to water vapor. This has been used successfully for decades for bonding sandwich panels. Because it does not foam up, it can also be applied in a slightly thicker layer. 2-component adhesives are also used in commercial vehicle bodies, where their vibration-damping effect and ability to equalize temperatures are particularly in demand. In sandwich elements, these properties have the advantage that the core and outer layers remain firmly bonded together despite the loads acting on them. If the sandwich elements are made of materials that are permeable to water vapor, 1-component adhesives have proven their worth. They are usually based on polyurethane (PUR). Contact adhesives have an immediate initial strength and can be used on vertical surfaces, for example.
Solvent-free adhesives for large-area bonding
Both contact adhesives and water-based dispersions are suitable for bonding large surfaces that require immediate initial adhesion. Compared to solvent-based adhesives, dispersions have the advantage of being significantly less harmful to the environment and pose fewer health risks during processing. Solvent-based adhesives have the advantage that they achieve significantly faster initial strength than dispersions. The high-performance adhesives from RUDERER effectively support the function of a sandwich element and provide users with the result in the desired size, thickness and material combination. This ensures the reliable and high-performance production of sandwich panels at all times.
