2. Structure and Classification of Monoterpenes
Monoterpenes are the simplest form of terpenes, consisting of two isoprene units with the molecular formula C10H16. Isoprene units are the building blocks for all terpenes and are derived from the five-carbon precursor isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) or its isomer dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP). The combination of two isoprene units yields a variety of monoterpene structures, which can be categorized into different types based on their structural characteristics:

a. Linear Monoterpenes:
Myrcene: One of the simplest acyclic (linear) monoterpenes, found in the essential oils of plants like bay, and hops.
Ocimene: Another linear monoterpene, commonly present in the essential oils of mint, parsley, and some tropical fruits.
b. Cyclic Monoterpenes:
Limonene: A widely recognized monoterpene with a cyclic structure, limonene is abundant in citrus fruits and is responsible for their characteristic smell.
Pinene: Found in pine trees, pinene exists in two forms (alpha and beta) and is known for its piney scent.
c. Monoterpenoid Alcohols:
Geraniol: A linear monoterpenoid alcohol found in rose oil and citronella oil, known for its floral fragrance.
Linalool: Present in lavender, linalool is another monoterpenoid alcohol that contributes to its calming aroma.
d. Monoterpene
Menthone: Found in peppermint oil, menthone is a monoterpene known for its cooling sensation.
Pulegone: Another commonly present in spearmint and pennyroyal, with potential applications in flavor and fragrance.
Monoterpenes can be further modified by the addition of functional groups (such as hydroxyl or carbonyl groups) to form monoterpenoids, which are oxygenated derivatives of monoterpenes.

3. Biosynthesis of Monoterpenes
Monoterpenes are synthesized in plants through the mevalonate pathway (MVA) in the cytoplasm or the methylerythritol phosphate pathway (MEP) in plastids. The synthesis begins with the formation of isoprene units, which are then condensed to form geranyl diphosphate (GPP), a key precursor of monoterpenes.

In the MVA pathway:

Acetyl-CoA molecules are condensed to form mevalonic acid.
Mevalonic acid is phosphorylated and decarboxylated to yield isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP).
IPP is isomerized to DMAPP, which is used in the condensation reaction to form GPP
