Lohmar, 14.05.24. The formative experience of a time abroad in the British Isles means living with a host family and attending school or boarding school, depending on the accommodation. Applicants to the student exchange organization international EXPERIENCE e. V. often seek advice on both options.

Here are the three most important aspects:

1. personal support and everyday life: Host students experience culture and everyday life up close in a family. They become part of the host family, eat together and take part in daily routines. This promotes language skills and an understanding of cultural nuances. At boarding school, on the other hand, life is more structured and supervision is more institutional. Students have fixed times for lessons, hobbies and meals, which means less individual freedom and more discipline.

2. independence and self-reliance: In a host family, students learn to find their way in a new environment and to deal with a wide range of personalities. They respect the rules of the household and adapt to them. In a boarding school, on the other hand, independence and personal responsibility are strongly encouraged as students learn to organize their daily lives with less direct adult supervision.

3. social interaction and friendships: In a host family, the student can build a deep bond with family members and develop a local network outside of school. At boarding school, social interaction is focused on the school community, which can lead to intense friendships as you spend a lot of time with your classmates. The constant proximity to peers and living in shared rooms promotes teamwork and social skills.

International EXPERIENCE e. V. has very satisfied program participants in both variants: For some, staying with a host family is the only option, as it offers deep cultural immersion and more personal support. Other young people attend a boarding school with a structured environment that offers a strong community and independence.

The choice ultimately depends on the student's personal preferences and educational goals. This is the subject of the individual consultation that parents and teenagers have with the exchange organization's experts.

Interested young people and their parents should take advantage of the intensive consultation and do some in-depth research. At international EXPERIENCE e. V., we discuss in detail where their wishes and needs are particularly well met. Blogs, social media and podcasts are further sources of information on what exchange students can expect in their host country.

A lot of information is also provided in online rooms and returnees can be interviewed:

On 16.05.24, a student exchange to the UK and Ireland will be explained in an online zoom; on 21.05.24, it will be about boarding school stays worldwide. The meeting links and further information dates can be found here:
