What does a student exchange cost and where can I go abroad?

Lohmar, 28.05.24. School fees that exchange students have to pay abroad, as well as an allowance to the host family for accommodation, food and care, are costs that quickly add up. They vary depending on the destination country. Sometimes even considerably. The exchange organization international EXPERIENCE e. V. provides initial guidance:

The cheapest student exchanges are to those countries that have a lower or similar cost of living compared to Germany: Italy, France, South Africa, Chile, Argentina.

The USA scholarship program with the J1 visa is slightly more expensive, as host families do not receive a subsidy. Their search and preparation are time-consuming and the costs are incurred for the selection, preparation and support of the host families and young people. This program is the only one that also waives the participants' tuition fees at a public high school.

Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland have slightly higher costs compared to the aforementioned countries.

For a period abroad in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and at a private school in the USA, the costs are usually twice as high as in the cheapest destination countries, due to the 30% higher everyday costs: host families must receive a suitable subsidy to cover their expenses for housing, food and care. This is in addition to the childcare and school fees.

And how do I find the right country for me? In addition to the financial framework, the differences between the destination countries in the student exchange also play a major role. A procedure for choosing the right country can look like this:

* Determine language: Which foreign language do I want to learn/improve?
* Compare school systems: Course choice? Choice of subjects?
* Leisure activities: Where are hobbies practiced? Through clubs or the school? Are there any costs involved?
* Other criteria can be: culture, family life, climate, public transportation, food.
