What does a student exchange cost and which destination makes sense?

Lohmar, 28.05.2024 School fees that exchange students have to pay abroad, as well as an allowance to the host family for accommodation, food, selection, preparation and support are costs that quickly add up. They can vary considerably depending on the destination country. The exchange organization international EXPERIENCE e. V. provides initial guidance:

The cheapest student exchanges are to those countries that have a lower or similar cost of living compared to Germany: Spain, Italy, France, South Africa, Chile, Argentina.

The USA scholarship program with the J1 visa is slightly more expensive, as host families do not receive a subsidy. Their search and preparation are time-consuming and the costs are incurred for the selection, preparation and support of the host families and young people. This program is the only one that also waives the participants' tuition fees at a public high school.

Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland have slightly higher costs in comparison.

For a period abroad in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the USA private school, the costs are usually twice as high as in the cheapest destination countries mentioned, due to the 30% higher cost of living in everyday life. Host families must receive a suitable subsidy to cover their expenses for housing, food and care. Care and school fees are also included here.



In addition to the financial framework, the differences between the destination countries in the student exchange also play a major role. A procedure for this can look like this:

* Determine language.
* Compare school systems: Choice of courses? Choice of subjects?
* Leisure activities, where are hobbies practiced? Are there costs involved?
* Culture, family life, climate, public transportation, food can be possible criteria.
