London Drainage Facilities explains who is responsible for repairing drains and sewers

Leading drainage company London Drainage Facilities (LDF) clarifies exactly who is responsible for repairing drains and sewers.

Who is responsible for repairing drains?

Homeowners are responsible for maintaining and repairing any drains that are within the boundaries of the home, and in the event of something going wrong, the homeowner will be required to pay for this to be fixed. They are also in charge of choosing a suitable company to carry out the required work.

Who is responsible for repairing sewers?

Due to new Government legislation, effective as of 2011, sewers are now maintained by local water companies. Should they need to, these authorities have the right to enter your property in order to inspect your sewer.

Private and unadopted sewers

If you live in a block of flats it is more likely that your property has a private or unadopted sewer. Should repair work need doing and you own a property you are responsible for the cost of maintaining it. If the sewer serves a number of properties all owners are jointly responsible for the cost.

“Generally speaking, a homeowner is responsible for the drains inside the boundaries of the property and the lateral drains and sewers outside of the property boundaries are the responsibility of the sewage company,” explains Fraser Ruthven, Head of Marketing and Growth at LDF.

“However, there are still a large number of private and unadopted drains within the UK, and should a property be served by one of these, it could be up to the resident to maintain it. If there is any uncertainty, I would recommend contacting the water company directly for further information – just to be on the safe side.”

The UK based drainage company London Drainage Facilities (LDF) discusses the various benefits of London’s new $7 billion (£4.2 billion) super sewer. Due to London’s increasing population and the fact that much of the land in the area is covered with hard surfaces, the capital’s existing sewer system, originally constructed in the 1860s, cannot cope when rainwater enters the sewers. As a result, a brand new super sewer has been introduced. A
