Update your drainage systems or prepare for this to happen

The UK based drainage company London Drainage Facilities (LDF) urges people to maintain or update their drainage systems, in light of the Westminster flooding in June 2016.

The basement at Westminster was severely flooded with sewage earlier this year, after a combination of heavy rainfall and a high Thames tide could not be held back by the Victorian drainage system.

The flood destroyed the basement, forming pools near the high voltage cables that carry electricity through the building and triggering a power cut.

Should a heavy downpour of a similar scale happen again, the mains water tanks will be shut down and the toilet and taps out of bounds.

“When it comes to maintaining your drains, you can never be too careful,” says Matthew Southgate at London Drainage.

“To prevent your drainage systems failing, we recommend replacing defective flood protection valves and inputting defenses to mitigate flood damage.

“It is vital that you take every preventative measure possible to make the rain seem not so gloomy!”

For more information on how to optimise your drains and ensure they are fit for purpose this winter, please contact London Drainage Facilities directly.
