Examples of forgings: forged valves
Forgings in general are used when components are exposed to extreme loads and the area of application places the highest demands on them, such as high pressure, aggressive media, high or low temperatures, high security, and nuclear technology.👨🎓 A further article about forgings can be found here:
https://www.openpr.com/news/3425250/every-nut-bolt-and-screw-forgings-for-harsh-environments
Forged valve bodies and components are manufactured through a forging process in which steels or alloys are formed into their final shape. Forging wastes very little material, saving not only material but also energy. These valves are then heat treated and machined to obtain their final shape. They are mainly used to start, stop or regulate the flow of liquid or gas, ensuring maximum safety and efficiency.
Forged valves are in demand in all energy industries (oil, gas, coal, molten salt applications like solar thermal and nuclear power plants) and they are often made from highly specialized alloys. Their longevity is crucial for their function as they work in extreme and critical environments including military engineering and shipbuilding. Valve design can be very complex, especially when used in high pressure applications. Therefore, high-quality alloys and stainless steel are beneficial as they can interact seamlessly with other components.
Forged valve bodies are strong and durable, making them ideal for use under high temperatures and pressures. The forging process makes them resistant to typical problems such as cracking, shrinkage and porosity. They can also be heated and cooled quickly, making them suitable for continuous operational processes and minimizing the risk of unexpected failures.
The forging process is quick and economical compared to other methods and guarantees consistent quality for each valve, regardless of production volume.

Grain flow optimised forgings for maximum stability in critical environments
Forgings stand out for their optimized grain flow, which enhances fibre alignment and significantly improves structural integrity, making them ideal for critical applications such as bolts, pinions, gear wheels, and pressurised components. In closed-die forging, materials like steel and superalloys are reshaped between two die halves or, in some cases, additional die segments, further strengthening the component by aligning its internal grain structure. Forging materials that are challenging to work…

Steel for nuclear reactor vessels - temperature, pressure, corrosion
Reactor steels are special alloys used in nuclear power plants to handle the extreme conditions inside a reactor. In addition to high temperatures and pressures, these steels must also be able to withstand radiation.
Properties and requirements
The most important requirements for a reactor steel are heat and radiation resistance, as well as mechanical strength. These properties are achieved through the composition of the alloy and special manufacturing processes (forging, heat treatment,…
