EOS at EuroMold 2007: e-Manufacturing highlights in plastics and metals

EOS presents its current applications and systems at EuroMold 2007. Various laser-sintering systems in hall 8.0, booth F70, demonstrate how plastic and metal products are built directly from CAD data within hours. Using this technology, production concepts such as Just in Time Delivery or Mass Customization become reality. At the show, the world-wide leading machine supplier focuses on applications in key industries such as aerospace and medical devices.
EOS showcases an EOSINT P 730 and a FORMIGA P 100 on the booth. Introduced at EuroMold 2006, both systems are today established in the market as benchmarks for productivity and part quality. They manufacture plastic products from different materials live during the exhibition, directly from CAD data. e Manufacturing thus enables batch size optimized production and production concepts such as just-in-time delivery and Mass Customization. Show highlights include a full-scale laser-sintered leg prosthesis and several applications from the robotics and aerospace industries. The prosthesis was developed and designed especially for manufacture with laser-sintering. The individually built unique product ensures an optimal functional and aesthetic health care for patients, and has already received two German design awards.
The third machine on the show is the EOSINT M 270 for Direct Metal Laser-Sintering (DMLS). This system is building tooling inserts in EOS MaragingSteel MS1, a 1.2709 tool steel. The recent introduction of this material has significantly broadened applications in series tooling. “EOS MaragingSteel MS1 is definitely one of the reasons why our metal technology is currently experiencing a real boom. Sales of EOSINT M systems have increased over the last three years by an average of 43 per cent annually. But there were other drivers as well, for example our new titanium TiAl6V4 material“, states Dr. Michael Shellabear, Vice President at EOS. Different users from the medical device industry are already testing and qualifying Ti64; and exhibits from this industry are showcased on the booth. In the aerospace industry, the titanium alloy helps to decrease weight. Together with the unique capability of DMLS to produce hollow parts and spatial structures, this will help aircraft manufacturers to reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
