Sand sculpture exhibition in Prora with big anniversary exhibition

15 years of the Rügen Sand Sculpture Exhibition - the show, which once began in a windswept tent on the outskirts of Binz, has developed into one of the world's largest indoor events of its kind.

For almost as long, the vacation agency Ostseeappartements Rügen (OAR) has been following the development and growth of the event with its RügenInsider blog, which has become a year-round highlight for fans young and old at its new location in the Glaspalast Prora.

For the anniversary year, the 40-strong team led by Managing Director Thomas van den Dungen has gone the extra mile: On the approximately 4,000 square meters of exhibition space in the Glass Palace, an impressive world has been created from a good 9,000 tons of special sand, in which fantasy, reality and history meet in unique harmony.

Under the title "Rügen & a bit of the sea", the works of art, which are up to eight meters high, reflect the beauty of the island and the sea, showcase famous sights, are dedicated to Rügen's rich world of legends and, of course, also give the famous buccaneer Klaus Störtebeker and his adventures the space they deserve. The painter Caspar David Friedrich, to whom a special exhibition is dedicated on the occasion of his 250th birthday, is also given very special recognition.

Benches invite visitors to linger on the disabled-friendly circular route through the exhibition. Small information boards explain the scenes depicted and provide information about the respective creator. 25 international artists, including world and European carving champions, have left their mark in Prora this year.
