New Association of Progressive Mosques Formed to Advance Islamic Reformation
Association of Inclusive Mosques seeks to alter the local Muslim communities by bringing Progressive Islam as an alternative voice to Orthodox Islam.May 9, 2016 - Washington, DC - Association of Inclusive Mosques (AIM) is a new non-profit organization based in Washington, DC that will represent a group of progressive mosques around the country. The initiative will place ten mosques in the largest markets.
AIM will work closely with the Muslim Education Center for Creative Academics (MECCA), an institute that trains students to become certified faith leaders.
“AIM will take some of the MECCA graduates and place them in large cities around the country,” said Imam Daayiee Abdullah, a renowned progressive leader and founder of both organizations. “Whereas MECCA educates the leaders AIM will partner with the trained leaders by educating the communities,” he continued, “AIM will do that by providing the national support they need to run their mosques smoothly.”
Imam Abdullah founded MECCA in 2014 and has since secured support from Arcus Foundation. Having run progressive mosque in the past he says the community is ready for a more connected system of progressive mosques, and hopes a national organization exclusively focusing on local needs will be exactly what they had been waiting for.
“AIM will work with national and international bodies to bring support to the local communities,” Imam Abdullah said.
AIM will continue to develop alongside MECCA in the coming months.
The mission of the Association of Inclusive Mosques (AIM) is to enrich Muslim life by placing, advocating, and representing progressive Islamic leaders in local communities across the United States.
AIM works to accomplish its mission by:
Placing the graduates of Muslim Education Center for Creative Arts (MECCA), an online progressive seminary, in local Muslim communities.
Serving the Muslim community by offering contemporary, alternative, and inclusive solutions to challenges faced in our times.
Creating a network of like-minded leaders whose mission is to take the mosque back to the community by making it a fun, informative, and communal space through education, sports, and entertainment while serving as a holy space for worship, celebration, and gathering.
