She was honored at the 1939 New York World's Fair as one of the "Most Distinguished Businesswomen". She was also an active member of the Atlantic City Board of Trade.
She was also dedicated to her local community. Madame Washington founded a nursing home - Apex Rest - for the elderly in Atlantic City, and, after encountering discrimination at the local golf course, she established her own for people of all races to enjoy a round of golf.
In the late 1930s, she purchased tracts of land in Pomona, New Jersey, establishing Apex Farm and Apex Rest. Fueled by a commitment to inclusivity, she designed and built Apex Golf Course in the late 1940s, opening its doors to individuals of all races, creeds, nationalities, and economic statuses.

After Madame Washington's passing in 1953, the course underwent changes, being sold and renamed Sandale Country Club. It operated under this name until 1970.

A New Chapter: The Truitt Legacy:
In 1970, the course and surrounding property found new stewards in local agriculturalists Vernon and Regina Truitt. After meticulous efforts, including planting over 400 trees, rebuilding every green and tee box, and refurbishing the clubhouse, the course re-emerged as Pomona Golf Course. For five decades, Vernon Truitt dedicated himself to cultivating both the land and the business. After the passing of Vern and Jeanne, the course remained in the family and now they are ready to hand over the torch to carry the legacy.
