Ever since the late 1990’s, businesses have been leveraging the Internet to obtain information about potential customers, competitors, and suppliers. In many cases, valuable information can be found simply by visiting the web site of a particular company of interest. However, the information found on company web sites is invariably self-serving and censored in an attempt to maintain a competitive advantage.

To gather more revealing facts, businesses often turn to third-party web sites. Some of this independent data is obtained simply by typing a descriptive term into a search engine. Of course, the results of a broad search must be scrutinized to ascertain the credibility of each source of information. Another option is to seek facts from trusted sources. As an example, two trusted sources for financial information are Hoover’s and Dun & Bradstreet.

Many trusted sources existed prior to the wide spread adoption of the Internet. Case in point, both Hoover’s and Dun & Bradstreet offered business information prior to the Internet boom, although each of them has become more readily accessible now that they have a presence online.

However, the most significant developments in the field of business intelligence since the emergence of the Internet go beyond convenient access to cataloged data. Considering that every Internet user has the capacity to be a provider of data, and not just a recipient, the most innovative web services related to business intelligence are those that gather information from a large base of Internet users.

One example is a web service named GoSee4Me (http://www.GoSee4Me.com). This company has recruited an extensive network of amateur photographers around the world to capture digital photos of anything in their local area upon request. An image of almost any object, structure, or physical location that is open to the public can be obtained inexpensively because the amateur photographers bid against each other to provide the photos, which drives the price down to an affordable level.
