Alkaline fuel cell (AFC) was the first fuel cell technology applied to practical power generation. Today, they are still serving as power suppliers for space shuttles and drinking water suppliers for astronauts.
However, due to CO2 poisoning, AFC was considered not suitable for terrestrial transportation applications, as the ambient CO2 concentration far exceeds the acceptable level for an AFC.

It is well known that oxygen reduction reaction kinetics is much faster in an alkaline environment than in an acidic environment; therefore, cheap nickel and silver, instead of expensive platinum, can be used as catalyst materials in AFC.
