With reports of more than 122,000 people visiting the NHS Website for hay fever advice last week, Maidstone-based commercial cleaning company Kent Gurkha has come up with some handy advice on limiting the suffering.

If you suffer from hay fever and want to minimise allergens in your home, Kent Gurkha have come up with their top ten cleaning tips that will help to reduce your hay fever symptoms.

Dusting

Dusting regularly is crucial to remove pollen and other allergens that settle on surfaces. Use a damp cloth or a microfibre cloth to trap dust particles instead of spreading them around.

Vacuuming

Vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstery frequently to eliminate pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. Make sure your vacuum cleaner has a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter to effectively trap tiny particles.

Mopping

Hard floors should be mopped regularly with a damp mop. Avoid using dry brooms or sweeping techniques that can stir up allergens into the air.

Bedding

Wash your bedding, including pillowcases, sheets, and blankets, in hot water (at least 130°F or 54°C) weekly to kill dust mites and remove pollen.
Consider using hypoallergenic covers for pillows and mattresses.

Curtains and blinds

Wash curtains regularly or opt for blinds that can be easily wiped clean. Curtains tend to collect dust and pollen, so keeping them clean helps minimise allergens.

Use air purifiers

Consider using air purifiers with HEPA filters to help remove pollen, dust, and other allergens from the air. Place them in rooms where you spend the most time, such as your bedroom or living room.

Consider your pets
If you have pets, bathe them regularly to reduce the amount of pollen they bring indoors. It's also important to keep their bedding clean and wash it frequently.

Outdoor clothing

When you come inside after being outdoors, remove your shoes and outerwear and change your clothes. This prevents pollen and other allergens from spreading throughout your home.

Keep windows closed

On days when pollen counts are high, keep your windows closed to prevent allergens from entering your home. Instead, use air conditioning or fans to circulate the air.

Maintain a clean environment

In general, keeping your living space clean and decluttered can help minimise the build-up of dust and allergens. Regular cleaning and tidying up can make a noticeable difference in reducing hay fever symptoms.
