PKRA 2007 Chile Day 3

Press release from: John C. Gotidoc

A much anticipated third day of the Movistar Kiteboarding World Cup 2007 in Matanzas, Chile kicked off but the cross-onshore winds coming from the south-south west started out lighter than expected. The mandatory skippers meeting started at approximately 12:00pm but with the wind still below PKRA standards so the race director announced a series of wind delay notices. Finally at 15:00h, the 20-knot wind was strong enough and provided good surf creating 3-meter waves which set the stage for some non-stop kiteboarding action. There were clear sunny skies throughout the day with the temperature peaking at 15° Celsius but felt like it was much colder.

The event started with four heats of the Wave competition dubbed “Expression Session” to decide on the seeding. The wave heats ran 20-minute sessions and a 3-minute transition period with 6 competitors for every heat where the eight top riders would be seeded in the main vent. Results are being kept secret until tomorrow morning when the race director will create the competition ladder for the wave competitors.

After the Expression Session, the first round of the men’s freestyle elimination event kicked off with four heats. First off were Marc Jacobs (North, New Zealand) against local kiteboarder Ian Warner in Heat #2. Jacobs had an easy win with a blind judge with aerial handle pass, heelside railey with a frontside handle pass 360, slim, mobe, front mobe and kiteloop handle pass while Warner only managed to land a mobe and crashing several other moves. Meanwhile, Chilean riders Jose Valenzuela (Slingshot) defeated Diego Dominguez (Airush) in their game in Heat #4. Valenzuela stomped a slim chance over Dominguez’s krypt and vulcan. Etienne Lhote (F-One, France), currently ranked #20 in the PKRA world standings defeated local ace Francisco Jose Molina with a good display of tricks and used the waves as a launching pad for some really big moves. Lhote went big with an indy front side 5, front side 360, front mobe, slim, KGB and mobe off the waves. Molina gave quite a good show, landing a kiteloop-backloop with grab and a kiteloop-backside 180. A seal popped up in the competition zone to check out what the fuss was all about and stayed for a few minutes probably cheering for Chilean buddy, Molina. In the second set of Heat #8, Maciek Kozerski (Naish, Poland) defeated Pablo Rosemary (RRD, Chile) with a downloop to blind, downloop-frontloop and a kiteloop. Rosemary had a tough time but landed a slim, blind judge, blind judge with aerial handle pass, back to blind air pass and a big kiteloop, although these proved no match for Magic Maciek’s moves.

The competition concluded around 18:00h. Tomorrows mandatory riders’ meeting is scheduled at 11:30am with first possible start at 12:00 noon, starting off with the main event of the Wave competition plus the continuation of the Freestyle games.

Due to the proximity and limited availability of Internet access, the Live Results will be updated nightly, instead of the usual minute-by-minute updates.
