Start-Stop phenomena for PEM fuel cells

Press release from: FuelCon AG

Highly regarded presentation at Fraunhofer ISE workshop.

As its contribution to the BMWi funded project “Stress”, the FuelCon AG develops in consultation with the Fraunhofer-Institut for Solar Energy Systems ISE a testing station for analyzing start-stop cycles of PEM fuel cells. Within this frame, the Fraunhofer ISE organized the workshop „Start-Stop phenomena and strategies for PEMFC” in December 2014. As invited speaker, Mathias Bode (Managing Board FuelCon AG) presented suitable test environments and methods.

PEM fuel cells are mostly stressed by electrical load changes and start-stop processes. Latter mainly occur at mobile applications. Irreversible corrosion processes at the electrodes result in a stronger degradation of the individual cells. Thus, the project “Stress” has set itself the objective of developing an application-oriented test system including the needed testing environment for the evaluation of these processes, focusing on automotive / mobile applications. The implemented fuel cell testing environment should allow both, the practical adjustment as well as the simulation of operation conditions. The testing method itself should be adapted for different applications.

During his presentation, Bode first explained the test environment for analyzing start-stop phenomena as one significant milestone of the project work. Thereby, he pointed out the requirements, the necessary risk analysis and the realization of the process engineering to the workshop attendees. Finally, he introduced the latest test results: together with the Fraunhofer-ISE, FuelCon succeeded in developing a testing environment that is practicable for PEM singles cells as well as stacks and ensures high reproducibility of process. The active discussion, started at the end if Bode´s presentation demonstrated the great importance of the topic.

Fuel cell testing systems of FuelCon´s Evaluator series can be equipped with several extensions, as far as possible also supplementary. One of these extensions is the “Start-Stop-Extension” allowing the simulation of start-stop cycles for an accelerated degradation of the cell. The start-stop-extension includes the needed process engineering as well as testing scripts and an enhanced safety concept.

About FuelCon:

Consequently intelligent: that’s how we love solutions. FuelCon is the global leading supplier of test and diagnostic systems for fuel cells and batteries. For years, our name is recognized for innovative engineering and high quality, for highest safety standards and close consultation with our costumer.

With our testing systems for fuel cells we offer optimal solutions for all typical technologies like PEM, DMFC, SOFC or MCFC in a power range between a few watts up to 150kW. In addition, innovative test systems for evaluating electrolyser are available. With the “Evaluator-B” series we have developed a concept that fulfils the challenging testing requirements of modern batteries with high accuracy and flexibility. The test systems enable the comparison, evaluation and optimization of battery cells and packs, as well as simulation of different requirements for customized applications.

Testing and validating fuel cells is a highly complex procedure, where many single steps need to intertwine in order to eventually supply reliable measuring data and results. In dependence on the respective technology, this means especially an extensive preparation of test runs, where the test item, the test station and the test procedure as such must be enabled and adjusted for the corresponding requirements. As an experienced manufacturer of test stations
