'Aufi' and 'Owi': When Lechnerberg calls all athletes - Everybody can take part in the second Kaprun Touring Ski Race starting on 17th February
Anyone can put on a pair of skis. Dashing down a slope on two boards is no big deal, even for beginners, after a few hours of training. But skiing uphill? There are not many people who can manage a steep uphill climb on these racy pieces of winter sports equipment, entirely without the help of a chair lift! This challenge is part of the ordinary snow fun for all participants in this year's ’Aufi Owi Touring Ski Race’. On 17th February hobby athletes and professional sportspeople of all ages are meeting again in the 'Europa-Sportregion Zell am See-Kaprun' to prove their skills in this unusual race against the laws of nature. All those who would like to be involved can enter their names to take part. The starter's gun for the six-kilometre trial of strength on powder snow is fired at half past six in the evening. From the start at Salzburger Platz in Kaprun, the course leads to Lechnerberg and 'aufi' (up) to the mountain station. Once there, the participants classically dash 'owi' (down) again in the direction of the town centre. And then they are off once more on their second lap. Last year the quickest runners managed the 500 metres of difference in altitude in just under 33 minutes - for professional athletes the course is a sprint rather than a real challenge. But even for them such an ascent would be quite impossible without a pair of touring skis equipped with climbing skins that prevent them from sliding backwards.
Apart from the fun, all participants, whether they are professionals or hobby athletes, can expect a further reward: each runner is compensated for the 'exertion' with a meal, hot drinks for warming up, and a little souvenir gift. The 'top boy' or 'top girl' will even have the pleasure of receiving a valuable Tissot multifunctional watch.
'An exertion shared is an exertion halved' is the motto for the starters in the pair competition: in the men's, women's or mixed teams each partner has to do just one lap. Their running times are then added and the average is calculated and taken as the final result. Those who come first here win a weekend stay including half-board for two people at Steigenberger Hotel Kaprun. Unfortunately, chances of winning are not all that good. There will be a lot of competition for this prize - about 150 people are expected to participate in the race.
People who want to participate can have their names put on the list by Christian Pfeffer (c.pfeffer@europasportregion.info) until 16th February. There is more information on the race on the Internet at www.europasportregion.info.

They seem surprised, perhaps even a little intimidated at first when Sebastian Kaufmann gets out his microphone. They have met in the cable car of the trassXpress, a state-of-the-art facility taking visitors up to Schmittenhöhe. 'Heike' answers the woman sitting next to Kaufmann shyly when being asked about her name. Together with Sabine and Frank, she has come to the region from Braunshardt in Germany to spend her holidays on…
Tourism experts are looking forward to the 'castlecamp' at Kaprun from 13th Sept …
It is general practice among the visitors of a 'barcamp' to take home a sticker once the 'unconference' has finished. That way, the participants want to say, 'I was in on that.' The idea is not really new. For decades, travellers have collected that kind of souvenirs of their holiday destinations and stuck them to their suitcases. It's the 'barcamps' themselves that are new. They have only been organized for…

Anyone who has ever been in the audience of a large conference, congress, or seminar, maybe even for several days in a row, knows that phenomenon only too well: there are set schedules to be followed, hours of talks and lots of useless information to be listened to. And the only topic you are really interested in is usually placed right at the bottom of the agenda. By the time…
