METRAHIT COIL - Electric Motor Tester Meets Digital Multimeter

Diagnosis, maintenance and servicing of electric drive motors necessitate the measurement of various electrical quantities, as well as function and safety tests. Several measuring and test instruments are required to this end which are only conditionally portable and thus unsuitable for on-site service calls. GOSSEN METRAWATT’s new METRAHIT COIL unites all important measuring and test instruments for electric drives into a single handheld device. In addition to a universal digital multimeter, the special instrument also includes an insulation measuring instrument and a motor coil tester. As a handheld instrument, this combination is unique throughout the world.

The short-circuited coil detection function included in the METRAHIT COIL is a world’s first. In combination with the COIL TEST ADAPTER, asymmetries resulting from short-circuited coils can be detected by comparing the measurement results obtained for motor coils in multiphase drives. Measurement is performed with a charging voltage of 1000 V, which also makes it possible to detect errors which only occur under operating conditions. The coils are compared and the evaluation is carried out automatically by the instrument.

The METRAHIT COIL also measures insulation resistance up to 3.1 GΩ with an adjustable test voltage of 50 to 1000 V and automatic detection of interference voltage. Insulation resistance is tested at motors at regular intervals.

With 18 multimeter functions, TRMS measurement up to 10 kHz and an illuminated display with 30,000 places, the METRAHIT COIL is ideal for universal use. Furthermore, the special multimeter is equipped with data memory for up to 15,000 measured values and a patented DATA HOLD function. Measured values can be conveniently transferred to METRAWIN 10 software via the integrated infrared interface and an adapter.

The first customer to make use of the METRAHIT COIL is STILL, an internationally leading manufacturer of forklift trucks, platform trucks and tractors plus the latest Intralogistics systems. Already for many years now, STILL has been relying on measuring technology from GOSSEN METRAWATT in the field of service and maintenance for electric forklifts. Up until recently, the “METRAHIT ISO PRODUCED FOR STILL” had been used for these tasks. With their requirement for the detection of short-circuited coils in electric drives, STILL provided the impetus for the development of the METRAHIT COIL. More than 90% of all motors faults can be traced back to the inverter, which is therefore replaced as an initial step when problems occur. If the motor coil was the problem, this could not be detected immediately on-site. The actual defect was not pinpointed until the inverter had been unnecessarily replaced and several costly work hours had accumulated. Consequently, investment in the METRAHIT COIL is very quickly amortized.
