Wolf Wonder at the Brandenburger Tor
When strolling from the Reichstag to the Brandenburger Tor and you walk across the inner courtyard of the Palais at the Pariser Platz, you’ll be in for a surprise. A new place for encounters is waiting right next to Stephan Balkenhols’s larger than life sculpture “Big man with little man”.In the windows of the Theodor Tucher Restaurant, near the Brandenburger Tor, adjacent to the Pariser Platz, six of Wolf Wonder’s pictures are on display. During the four week exhibition, the artist confronts the noble and historical Theodor Tucher with his contemporary art.
Even though the six figurative pictures are all painted in the base colour blue, it offers the viewer a complex appearance. At the same time diffident and expressive to become aesthetical provocative. Basically it is a result and a reflection of Germany’s history and present.
One of the main pictures, the dark blue “It’s not a Mensch, it’s a Kopf”, springs right to one’s attention, reminding us of the political scandal during Chancellor Schröder’s era. The picture “Ein Breuer macht noch keinen Sommer” (A Breuer doesn’t yet make a summer) is dedicated to the masterminds of the German economy. In a friendly light blue, Wonder quotes the transitory of worldly grandiosity.
When entering the dining room, you’ll find six more pictures from the workgroup “Coming Home” and you’ll experience something with an almost poetic touch. They are the core pieces of the exhibition which inspired the young chef, Thomas Hartwig, to create a six-course-meal, which is just as wonderful and colourful as the pictures of Wolf Wonder. With such lovely descriptions like: “Spring”, “Fall”, “White Dove”, “Black Bird”, “Joy and Agony” or “Me Father Home”. And to enhance the symbolism of the last picture, a hough of pork gratin is being served. A selected choice of wines will round up this very unusual symbiosis.
The vernissage was celebrated on the 4 September 2007 in silent admiration. Altogether there are 24 pictures on display.
When entering the reading lounge on the second floor, you will be confronted with a series of five more pictures. On a kind of minimalistic-painted comic strip with a narrative character, the small animal rides on a bullet just like the baron Münchhausen to aim at a specific target. “New Aim” and “Choose Wise” can be read on the pictures. “Choose your target with caution”. On the last picture, the small animal can be seen in an idyllic coming home scene which means, searching for a place called home remain the target and the task.
In the literature salon which is frequently visited by statesmen, just above the fireplace you’ll find the series: “I can fly” And just like “New Aim” it is a new work from 2007. Because the pictures tell a life story, the viewer will be animated to read and study. The small animal symbolises the artist’s autobiographical odyssey and the roller coaster ride of his life’s ups and downs during the years 1950 until 2010.
The self-portrait “Sweet Home” inspired the art historian Susanne Meyer to this picture analysis. The actor Rainer Guldener will be reading passages from this text on the 25 September 2007 at 8 pm in the literature salon at the Theodor Tucher Restaurant. Admission is free.
The exhibition and the mentioned menu can be enjoyed until the 7 October 2007 at the Theodor Tucher Restaurant.
