Shell’s Upstream Business Unit Trials Intelligence Plaza For Market Insights Sharing

2014-01-09 – Royal Dutch Shell plc, a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies with around 90,000 employees in more than 80 countries and territories, has successfully trialed a competitive intelligence software, Intelligence Plaza®, for its upstream business.

Like any company, Shell routinely monitors the factors that influence their business prospects, and tries to predict what may lie ahead. Shell’s upstream business searches for and recovers crude oil and natural gas. It liquefies and transports natural gas, and operates the infrastructure needed to deliver both oil and natural gas to market. The upstream business also extracts bitumen from oil sands and converts it into synthetic crude oil. In addition, the business unit develops wind power as a means to generate electricity. The group’s strategy seeks to reinforce Shell’s position as a leader in the oil and gas industry while helping to meet global energy demand in a responsible way. Safety, environmental and social responsibility are at the heart of its activities.

Shell’s Business Intelligence and Information Portfolio Manager, Con Goedman, says various Shell business units need to monitor the business environments better and more efficiently and having a world class competitive intelligence software like the Intelligence Plaza would help.

Intelligence Plaza® is a web-based competitive intelligence software that automates routines and organizes data in one storage repository, while enabling information sharing and delivery to end-users. Developed by a team of market intelligence specialists and software specialists at Global Intelligence Alliance (GIA), Intelligence Plaza offers easy-to-use collaboration, search and email alert features.

“We are constantly on the look-out for ways to add value to our business stakeholders. Gathering external perspectives has never been so important, but many professionals struggle with time constraints when trying to sift through the massive amounts of news and reports. The Intelligence Plaza could be the right solution in channeling the right market information to Shell’s business units effectively and efficiently. So far, during the trial year, we have seen business and productivity gains,” said Goedman.

The Intelligence Plaza allows Shell managers to automatically categorize and collate internal documents and streamline their research activities. Business managers looking for information can access the relevant news and insights that are tailored to their needs, in one or two clicks.

“The majority of customers who use Intelligence Plaza as their competitive intelligence software say that its user-friendliness is a key factor for encouraging their people to openly share information. In today’s world where there is a huge problem with data overload and complexity, information sharing from trusted sources is vital to moving ahead. Other popular features of the Plaza include the ability to fully automate data collection while maintaining some level of human involvement, the personalization of user views and alerts, as well as its great interface on mobile devices. In fact, our research amongst a global base of hundreds of companies shows that world class CI software like the Plaza can reduce delays in decision-making by 28 percent and boost decision making efficiency by 25 percent as a result,” said Petteri Verronen, Vice President of Technology at Global Intelligence Alliance.
