The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) added more than 130 chemicals to its Safer Chemical Ingredients List on 24 July 2013. Among the 132 substances added to the list are 119 fragrances that are used in commercial and consumer cleaning products. These are the first fragrance chemicals to be included on the Safer Chemicals List.

Expanded Safer Chemical Ingredients List

A total of 602 chemicals are included in the Safer Chemical Ingredients List (http://www.epa.gov/dfe/saferingredients.htm) which was created by the EPA in September 2012. In a news release (1) the EPA stated that "Fragrances are an important yet complex part of many consumer cleaning products. By adding fragrance and other chemicals to the Safer Chemical Ingredients List, EPA continues its commitment to help companies make safer products and provide the public with greater access to chemical information."

Design for the Environment Standard for Safer Products

Using a three level safety classification the list serves as a guide for EPA’s voluntary Design for the Environment (2) (DfE) labeled products. Those must meet EPA’s rigorous, scientific standards for protecting human health and the environment. All-purpose cleaners, laundry and dishwasher detergents, window cleaners, car and boat care, and many other products are among the more than 2,500 products certified under the DfE Standard for Safer Products.
