Well Being Digital's First In-Ear SpO2 Earbud Reference Design Completes Clinical Trial
Well Being Digital (WBD101) today announced the results of its in-ear blood oxygen saturation level (SpO2) earbud reference design clinical trial conducted with the Hypoxia Laboratory at Shenzhen University, Asia's pioneer test lab in oxygen desaturation. The SpO2 earbud reference design features the single point multimodal sensor array technology from WBD101 and the MAX86174A optical pulse oximeter and heart-rate sensor analog front end (AFE) from Analog Devices. Sponsored by Analog Devices on behalf of WBD101, the results of the clinical trial demonstrate the reliability and accuracy of the in-ear SpO2 monitoring with a root-mean-square accuracy of better than 3.5 percent, exceeding regulatory requirements of international medical device standards such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medical Device Regulations (EU MDR).A variety of wearable devices on the market today ranging from watches to medical grade vital sign monitors can detect a person's SpO2, an important element of health monitoring and patient care. A healthy person's SpO2 level is normally between 95 percent to 100 percent while figures lower than 95 percent would indicate health issues ranging from breathlessness and headaches to interference with heart or brain function.
The technology behind WBD101's non-invasive blood oxygen sensor array measures the different light absorption levels of infrared and red light by blood with more oxygen as compared to blood lacking oxygen. In the ear, the blood vessels are closer to the skin and less affected by motion, hence can be sensed more responsively and accurately. The MAX86174A is an extremely small AFE with one of the highest performance in the industry today, making it ideal for hearables where the form factor is extremely constrained. Together, the WBD101 blood oxygen sensor array and Analog Devices' MAX86174A AFE make up the first, complete in-ear SpO2 monitoring system reference design that can be used to make calls and listen to music, as well.
"The MAX86174A AFE from Analog Devices is a highly integrated PPG solution with excellent low noise performance," said Wallace Wong, Co-Founder and CTO of WBD101. "The AFE combined with our innovative single point multimodal optical sensing design and proprietary algorithm offers customers a compact and highly accurate earbud solution."
"Many wearables must operate around a compact design to bring convenience and comfort to consumers, and hearables are no exception," said Andrew Baker, Managing Director, Industrial and Healthcare Business Unit at Analog Devices. "In the hearables segment, we work closely with collaborators such as WBD101, who use our bio-sensor with their sensor array and proprietary algorithm to provide reference designs measuring heart rate and SpO2 in smart, tiny earbuds."
"We thank Analog Devices for the opportunity to collaborate and complete the SpO2 trial at the world-class Hypoxia Laboratory," said Kow Ping https://www.linkedin.com/in/kowping/, Co-Founder and Executive Director of WBD101. "Besides confirming accuracy of the new monitoring system, the ability to measure a drop in SpO2 from the ear rather than from the finger opens up new potential applications for this technology, such as protecting workers working in confined spaces, monitoring sleep disorders and monitoring cerebrovascular diseases," Kow added.
Well-suited for remote patient monitoring, chronic care management and telemedicine applications, the SpO2 earbud reference design will be available from WBD101 in Q2 of 2022.

Our bodies maintain a close and specific range of core body temperature (CBT) through thermoregulation so that we can function healthily throughout the day, however this optimal range is often challenged by physiological, environmental, or even clinical reasons which may be detrimental to our fitness, cognition performance or even health. In severe instances, extreme CBT deviation may even be lethal.
The need for continuous monitoring of CBT is evident. However,…
