Health-sensing capabilities have rapidly expanded beyond smartwatches into earbuds, as evidenced by the recent launches of Apple's PowerBeats Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3. Unlike smartwatches, which benefit from a flat, broad contact surface on the wrist, earbuds must contend with irregular geometries and smaller contact areas in the ear canal, concha, or behind the ear. Standard optical modules designed for watches cannot simply be repurposed for hearables.
