In the late 6th century BCE, the Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “Change is the only constant,”

Well, he would be happy to know that his words are still in existence.

Heraclitus believed that giving people space should be constant in our behavior. So if he were present today, he would be happy to look at how his beliefs are still. There are still some contradictory pointers along the lines though.

Recently, there has been a lot going on regarding the transitioning of work models/spaces to either a Permanent Remote, Office or Hybrid one. People are curious to know how the future of work in 2022 is going to look like.

On this note, let us review how the Future of Work in 2022 is going to look like to have a comprehensive arrangement of the underlying. Be it the benefits or the drawbacks. But hold on!

Do you know that our policymakers had already defined the term flexitime even before the pandemic shift?

Origin Of Flexible Working

- The concept of flexible working originated in the 1970s in academic records.

- According to the flextime policy, companies offer their employees a flexible working hours arrangement.

- Under the flexi-time policy, the employee has the flexibility to log in/out as per their suitability. However, they should complete the core work hours.

- For example, between 10 am and 4 pm is the core period people can choose when they work, subject to work-life balance.

- Total working hours under flextime are the same as the traditional work schedule.

Flexible working can open the doors for a wide range of opportunities for companies such as enhanced productivity, performance, and less absenteeism, a Meta-analysis of studies suggests.

The New Normal way:

Not only did pandemonium severely impact our way of working, but it also instilled the trait of adapting as per requirement.

Work-wise, this was probably one of the best-luck by chance scenarios in fulfilling a good number of family hours. Every working professional had a taste of what work-life balance could be like.

To be frank, the relief turned as a balance made out of thin air. As things started coming back to normal, the commitments soared from both work and home.

No amount of time put in could fulfill #FindTheBalance.

We knowingly or unknowingly looked at the bigger picture; we shifted back to traditional flexible working with slight add-ons like selecting the place/location of work.

Industry experts and leaders promoted the strengthening of ‘employees say’ at work and facilitated an employee-oriented work setting.

Allison Goodman, the founder of DuckDuckGo, talked about providing individual work flexibility.

Sundar Pichai talked about having a compressed working three/two model where employees will have four days of complete flexibility to work from anywhere for any given workweek.

A survey by LinkedIn was conducted with the byline Future of Work; 87% wanted to work remotely.

In August’21, Bacancy(https://www.bacancytechnology.com) had conducted a LinkedIn survey on knowing how people prefer their working space.

As per the poll(https://www.linkedin.com/posts/bacancy-technology_mondaymorning-mondaypoll-workplace-activity-6825271617225072640-oOHj) with 900 votes, 82% of people want to work remotely, 56% of the people voted their preference as work from home.

With a multifold of reasons behind the preference, one of the important ones is saving on the commute times.

Analysis (Opportunities v/s Obstacles):

While most people prefer work from home, it is vital to consider its underlying. The below chart summarizes a quantified distribution.


- The 46% of the workforce in India feel that they are more productive and successful, working from the office than in a home setting.

- 55% of the respondents think that this model has taken a toll on their learnings

- 41% of remote workers suffered from high-stress levels, compared with 25% of office employees.

Remote work doesn’t qualify in all areas. Professionals have started to realize that pure #remotework has some downsides.

Final Words:

For organizations to scale up their operations at the international and national levels at relatively lower costs, flexible working arrangements may prove a feasible option than permanent / non-flexible working arrangements.

Certainly, both employees and employers appreciate the benefits of flexible working. However, some drawbacks include extra expenses and responsibilities the organization would have to meet to provide the remote working arrangements. On the other hand, the employees may experience a cut in benefits under the reduced working hours.

From an employee’s perspective, it is vital to understand that the current course of action would determine the near future outcomes. Work-life balance is a state of mind, whether remote work or going to the office, or hybrid work. One should have a winning mindset to conquer the opportunities and embrace the uncertainties involved in making progress.
