Auction of works by international artists up to EUR 20.000 - Affordable Art

Munich, 01 February, 2013, (kk) – The big names of the international art scene will be there. Next to Picasso, Chagall and Warhol, Gabriele Münter will also provide a fresh spring scent from EUR 10.000 in the first Ketterer Kunst auctions that will open the season on April 19 and 20 with the following focal points:

1. Modern Art
2. Post War/Contemporary Art

On 1. Modern Art
In 2012 Gabriele Münter had already realized a number of top results for a total of 13 works, of which five even soared to six-digit realms. The October auction with works up to EUR 20.000 was led by her 1941 oil painting “Dahlien“, which climbed to a result of EUR 158.600*.
Thus it will be very exciting to see her watercolor with India ink drawing “Blumenblatt/Vogelvase“ being called up as it was created only one year earlier. Especially the artist's simple motifs rendered with an almost naive cheerfulness and a likewise bright coloring are highly sought-after. The painted clay bird and the flower bouquet are among her favorite motifs. The estimate is at EUR 10.000-15.000.
In the section of sculptures the work “Kleines Biest“ by Gerhard Marcks carries the same estimate, its self-confident attitude calls reminiscence of Degas' fourteen-year-old standing dancer.
Another work that fosters great expectations will be Ernst Barlach‘s bronze “Maske Friedrich Schult“ which was made after a gypsum model from 1920 and has been estimated at EUR 6.000-8.000.
However, works by renowned artists may already be obtained in three- or low four-digit realms. For instance, a view of the town of “Lüneburg“, a charcoal drawing by the New York artist Lyonel Feininger will be called up with an estimate of EUR 4.000-6.000.
Next to an aquatint etching by Max Ernst and a pencil drawing of a Ticino mountain farm by Karl Hofer (estimate each EUR 1.800-2.400), Erich Heckel is also represented, among others, with the 1914 woodcut “Sonnenaufgang“ (estimate: EUR 2.800-3.400).
“This is the perfect opportunity to either enhance an existing collection or to lay the basis for a first own collection“, says auctioneer and company owner Robert Ketterer.

On 2. Post War/Contemporary Art

This section is led by an untitled work of blue ink on paper by Georg Baselitz from 1982 and David Hockney‘s illusionist conceived etching “Rue de Seine“, as well as a chalk drawing with gouache by Serge Poliakoff (estimate each EUR 10.000-15.000). The “Abstrakte Komposition“ by Poliakoff is a sheet in soft colors, in its expression it follows the characteristic pictorial language of these days. Around the mid 1940s the artist worked out the structural unity of line and colors, merging both to a fascinating composition.

The section of Pop Art, already a classic of Contemporary Art, is represented by works from, among others Banksy, Jim Dine, Damien Hirst, Robert Rauschenberg and, of course, Andy Warhol. One of the highlights is also Roy Lichtenstein‘s offset lithography in colors “Crak!“ from 1963/64. The copy aside from the edition of 300 was made as an announcement for a Lichtenstein exhibition in the Gallery Leo Castelli from 28 September to 24 October, 1963 and has been estimated at EUR 9.000-12.000.

After the stunning result for an oil painting (starting price: EUR 280.000, result: EUR 512.000*) and a watercolor (starting price: EUR 28.000, result: EUR 116.000*) by the Beijing artist Zao Wou-Ki in December 2012 at Ketterer Kunst, two aquatint etchings in colors (estimate each EUR 900-1.200) by the French-by-choice will be called up that will also suit the small purse.
Exciting art by, for instance, Rupprecht Geiger, Paul Jenkins, Jasper Johns, Anish Kapoor, Alex Katz, Sigmar Polke and Jackson Pollock will complete the range of offerings.
