Akhil Bharatiya Terapanth Yuvak Parishad Mega Blood Donation Drive Bhilwara in Top 10

The noble act of Voluntary Blood Donation undoubtedly creates an egalitarian, caring and compassionate society.

In India every year October 1 is observed as National Voluntary Blood Donation Day and for 2012 the theme is “Somewhere Someone Needs You. Your Blood Donation is precious”. According to World Health Organization – WHO, a country needs a minimum stock of blood equal to 1% of its population which means India needs 12 million units of blood as against the present annual collection of about 9 million units resulting in 3 million units short.

The average donation rate in developed countries is about 45 to 150 donations per thousand populations as compared to 10 per thousand in transitional countries and 3.6 donations per thousand populations in developing countries while in India today a meager 9 per 1000 presently have chosen to donate blood. One unit of blood can save three lives if it is processed into its components – Red Blood Cells (RBCs), Platelets and Plasma. However, due to shortage of separation equipments, India presently processes into components only 30 % of blood collected which itself requires serious attention by all concerned.

When it is said that India today is top ranking globally for deaths from road accidents and maternal death, it goes without saying that loss of blood is a major factor in these deaths which can be overcome by spreading awareness about voluntary blood donation and by improving the efficiency of blood banking system. To increase awareness, it is very essential for public at large especially the youth to know that blood donation helps to prevent accumulation of excess iron and reduces chances of Cardio vascular Diseases – CVDs and that after donation, blood volume returns to normal levels within 24 – 48 hours while RBCs are replaced in about 4 – 8 weeks.

Many are not aware that RBCss have a life of about 120 days and that human body itself has a natural mechanism of discarding the dead cells as well as for generating new RBCs. In India any “Healthy” adult both male and female in the age group 18 -65 weighing 45 kg or more with a hemoglobin count of not less than 12.5 g/dl cans safely donate 3 - 4 times a year giving a gap of 4 – 3 months between two donations.

On September 17, Akhil Bharatiya Terapanth Yuvak Parishad – ABTYP organized a nationwide Mega Blood Donation Drive – MBDD with a motivating slogan “You Have, You Can – Donate Blood” which was endorsed by none other than youth icon and all time great cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. MBDD had set a target of crossing 100,000 units of blood collection on a single day spread across multiple cities and multiple locations in most cities which itself can be called Guinness World Records Attempt.

The final tally for the record breaking MBDD Mega Blood Donation Drive on 17 September organized by Akhil Bharatiya Terapanth Yuvak Parishad ABTYP was a whopping 96,600 units of blood with top 10 cities Chennai 5851, Jaipur 4968, Kolkata 4582, Ahmedabad 3694, Hyderabad 3171, Bangalore 3062, Erode 2634, Surat 2506, Pune 2066 and Bhilwara 1893.

It is indeed a matter of pride that at Bhilwara, Sangam India and ITM Sangam University participated in a big way on September 17, 2012 for this noble cause. Inaugurating the drive at Sangam University, Mr VK Sodani Executive Director Sangam India, Prof BR Natarajan President – Vice Chancellor, Prof NK Mathur Principal ITM urged the youth to come up in a big way to take up voluntary blood donation as a mission with passion. The organizing team at Sangam University included Mr SK Jain, Mr Vikalp Agarwal, Mr Vinesh Agarwal, Mr Rakesh Bhandari, Dr Rajeev Mehta, Mr Alok Singh, Mr Sanjay Sharma along with Mr Anil Shrimali who took excellent care of the catering arrangements. Hon’ble Members of current Rajasthan Legislative assembly Shri Gulab Chand Kataria and Shri Vitthalshankar Avasthi also graced the occasion and had words of praise for the hundreds of boys and girls who came forward for the noble cause.

Impressed by the enthusiasm of the students which included many girls as well as many first time donors, Mr Paras Surana Director Ostwal Group of Industries – OGI which had spearheaded the drive at Bhilwara announced that OGI was keen to offer placement prospects for the students of ITM – Sangam University. For the MBDD, 251 students and faculty from ITM Sangam University and 212 from Sangam India said “We Have, We Can” and donated a total of 463 units of blood. The combined efforts of one and all at Bhilwara resulted in an all time record collection of 1893 units of blood in a single day catapulting Bhilwara to all India 10th position.
