Sangam University Bhilwara Rajasthan - World Tourism Day 2012
No one has any doubt that in India today, the state of Rajasthan indeed is a jewel in the crown among the top ranking tourist destinations for both domestic and foreign travelers.Over the decades, tourism as a key driver for socio-economic progress has indeed experienced continued growth and deepening diversification to become one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world.
September 27 every year is celebrated as World Tourism Day - WTD, a special day set by the United Nations World Tourism Organization - UNWTO to remind the general population on the importance of the tourism industry, not only as the globe's major economic activity and source of employment, but also as a means to achieve cultural understanding and as a significant contributor towards the goals of alleviating poverty and improving livelihoods.
This year’s theme “Tourism & Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development” aims to highlight tourism’s role in a brighter energy future; a future in which the world’s entire population has access to modern, efficient and affordable energy services. The theme is also an opportunity to ensure that international tourism continues to play a role in tackling the major energy challenges of our time, being addressed by the 2012 United Nations International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.
For that matter, Tourism today indeed is at the forefront of some of the world’s most ambitious and innovative clean energy solutions: the aviation industry is implementing cutting-edge technologies to make aircraft lighter than ever before; commercial flights are beginning to use biofuels in their fuel mix; key card systems and energy saving light bulbs are increasingly being implemented in hotel rooms worldwide; and tour operators are asking for energy efficiency throughout their supply chains.
The contribution of tourism to economic activity worldwide is estimated at some 5% while its contribution to employment is estimated in the order of 6-7% of the overall number of direct and indirect jobs.
On the occasion of World Tourism Day, Prof BR Natarajan President – Vice Chancellor Sangam University Bhilwara shared with the students and faculty the significance of the day including the message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon which goes as "One of the world’s largest economic sectors, tourism is especially well-placed to promote environmental sustainability, green growth and our struggle against climate change through its relationship with energy”.
