Pioneers of Energy Efficiency - Salford University relies on Energy Monitoring with SenzaNET

The Salford University in Manchester has created the Salford Energy House. This is the first fully controllable Energy House and an in Europe unique environment for researchers and industry created under specific conditions in order to determine solutions and technologies to improve energy efficiency in existing buildings. E-Senza Technologies delivered the right technology for the measurement of energy consumption.

The Salford Energy House was built from reclaimed materials in a controlled laboratory environment with air chamber in the traditional 1915-Salford-style. It reflects 21% of the current housing stock in England. The whole establishment of the Energy House - from the taps to the refrigerator - is fully functional. The climate-controlled lab environment can create different weather conditions, including rainfall. The temperature in the house can be set from -2 ° up to +30°.

The University of Salford has chosen the unique wireless mesh network technology in Europe for smart energy consumption measurement of E-Senza Technologies, named SenzaNET. SenzaNET allows scientists to monitor and analyze data from a series of experiments that are planned in and around the Salford Energy House.
The sensors and adapters of E-Senza Technologies monitor continuously temperature, humidity and pressure as well as water and electricity consumption in the Salford Energy House. The values are measured, analyzed and managed and provide valuable information to improve energy efficiency.

The monitoring of the Energy House is facilitated through the use of wireless mesh networks of sensor nodes with protocols and signaling based on the internationally ratified IEEE 802.15.4 standard which operates on the 2.4GHz band. The sensors system comprises three SenzaGate wireless gateways and an array of SenzaBlock wireless nodes. Wireless nodes are distributed around the Energy House for measuring and continually monitoring the different parameters.

Each of the rooms within the Energy House have four temperature sensors located in each corner with probes to measure temperature at three heights. Furthermore a combined humidity sensor is located in the center of each of the rooms. Consumption of electricity gas and water is also monitored by a wireless smart meter plug device.
