Millboard keen to share its approach to sustainability
Millboard, the leading decking and cladding manufacturer, is sharing its sustainability credentials through a new section of its website. The company’s Head of Sustainability, David Jackson, explained that, ‘While sustainability has long been something we devote a lot of time and thought to, our customers rightly want to know what our position is on a range of ethical concerns. For some, this is how our products affect the environment, for others it is about how we look after our employees and how we source our materials. These days, it is important for companies not only to act in a sustainable way, but also to be transparent about their actions. The new section of the website allows anyone to check our approach to sustainability across a range of topics’.This approach is summarised by the company as ‘Life, Living and Livelihood’.
Millboard’s relationship to the environment is picked up under the ‘Life’ theme. As its decking and cladding are constructed from man-made materials, no trees are felled to produce them. Instead, extensive use is made of recycled and recyclable materials in both its boards and subframe system, while the energy used in their manufacture is derived from renewable sources. Waste is also kept to a minimum: for example, any boards which fall short of Millboards exacting standards are cut up to produce samples, where a vigorous selection process is undertaken to ensure they provide a true representation of the product.
The company’s approach to sustainability goes beyond caring for the environment by also addressing its social responsibilities and business practices. It looks after its employees well, with great support for those bringing up families and a commitment to paying fair wages, as evidenced by its accreditation by the Living Wage Foundation. When dealing with others, including customers, suppliers and distributors, it is committed to ethical and fair dealing over and above its strict legal obligations.
Millboard has also demonstrated its commitment to sustainability through its membership of the UN Global Compact. This is a global network of businesses of all sizes committed to adhering to ten specific principles in approaching human rights, labour, the environment and the fight against corruption. As David Jackson explains, ‘Millboard looked at the UNGC’s principles and found they were entirely in tune with our own, so it made complete sense to sign up and help build the momentum towards a fairer and more sustainable way of doing business all around the world.’
