The Board of County Commissioners of Hillsborough County unanimously approved the contract during a recent June 3 board meeting. The total backlog of the contract with the potential extension is worth about $280 million.
The contract will also give FCC one of the only three exclusive franchises to provide a commercial collection in the County, which could grow the backlog up to an additional $100 million.
FCC Environmental Services will operate the contract from a soon-to-be-constructed yard with the addition of 95 clean-energy fleet trucks and a new CNG fueling station. Hillsborough County has a population of about 1.5 million and is the fourth-most populous county in Florida.
“Hillsborough County represents a major milestone for the growth of FCC Environmental Services,” said CEO Inigo Sanz. “With it, we will now serve 1.5 million Floridians from coast to coast, joining other major operations in Orange, Palm Beach, Polk, and Volusia counties.”
The new Hillsborough County contract covers about 105,000 households where FCC Environmental Services will collect garbage twice weekly, as well as recycling and yard waste once weekly.
Houston-based FCC Environmental Services currently provides solid waste solutions for more than 1.2 million Floridians and nearly 8.5 million Americans.
