The Health-care Workers Permanent Residence Pathway: A Chance

The Health-care Workers Permanent Residence Pathway is Canada’s new immigration program specific to refugee claimants who are already in Canada, regardless if they have a failed or pending status claim before March 13, 2020. It is open to those who have worked in one of the eligible occupations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Primarily, they must have provided direct care to patients and meet the other eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

• Minimum number of hours: Pending or failed refugee claimants must work in one of the designated occupations for at least 120 hours from March 13 and August 14, 2020, and a total of 30 hours of full-time work every week for 6 months or a total of 750 hours of part-time work before August 31, 2021.

• Designated occupations: Jobs eligible for the Health-care Workers Permanent Residence Pathway are registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses; nurse aides, orderlies, and patient service associates; home support workers; nursing coordinators and supervisors; licensed practical nurses, and allied primary health practitioners. Refugee claimants' work descriptions must match those of the mentioned jobs.

• Work permit: Their work permit must be issued only after the refugee claim was made.

• Family members: You and your family members, who are already in Canada, must be admissible to Canada

If you have not reached the required work hours, you can still continue to submit your application. Complete the required work experience until August 31, 2021, and send your proof later.

Widow/Widower
If the spouse or common-law partner is the eligible refugee claimant but died from COVID-19 in Canada, the widow or the widower can still apply for the Health-care Workers Permanent Residence Pathway, as long as they and their family members are admissible in Canada and have been staying in Canada since August 14, 2020.
