How Canadian Families Can Avoid the Financial Impact of Providing Senior Care
The ‘A Snapshot of Family Caregiving and Work in Canada’ research of The Vanier Institute of the Family (February 2017) disclosed that acting as the primary caregiver for a senior member of the family offers many benefits. These include strengthened family relationships, a sense of personal growth, skills development, and increased empathy. However, the same report stated that in the previous 12 months of providing care, almost 50% of caregivers who are employed have missed an average of 8 to 9 days of work. Young carers, 36% of them to be specific, left work early, arrived to work late or took time off because of their caregiving responsibilities.
These missed work responsibilities translate to a loss of income. Forty percent of the respondents of a Ceridian study (2015) revealed that they have experienced financial hardship or income loss since becoming a primary caregiver. The Informal Caregivers in Canada: A Snapshot report (2001) indicated the numbers.
Over 50% of the respondents in the study made some adjustments to their employment. For every employed caregiver, the estimated cost of loss in present and future income was over $1.2 million. More than 40% had to spend extra, which was valued at $30,630 per employed caregiver.
These numbers are proof of the financial impact of providing primary care to a family member. Canadian families are thus urged to consider hiring overseas caregivers rather than being primary caregivers themselves.
Hiring a foreign caregiver offers long-term stability as the worker relies on the family for employment, as well as for permanent residency. Families can also be sure of high-quality care because foreign caregivers go through a thorough screening before they receive approval to work in Canada. The Home Support Worker Pilot of the Canadian Immigration enables Canadians to hire from overseas with ease.
