05-24-2012 08:17 PM CET | Associations & Organizations

Press release from: Young World Management

/ PR Agency: YWM Division of Public Relations

August 11th, 2012 commemorates the eleventh annual (Urban Garden Foundation’s) Miami Peace Festival. This outdoor festival attracts over 30,000 people from all walks of life. The Miami Peace Festival creates a platform for music, various cultural foods, and crafts. Over the past 10 years, local and national independent artists, Local County Commissioners, activists, Pastors, families of the victims of violence, as well as A-List Celebrities and Athletes have taken the stage to encourage our community to take a stand and promote the message of non-violence. With the recent acts of violence in our communities against our youth, The 11th Annual Miami Peace Festival is and has been a pillar of the inner city communities.

The Urban Garden Foundation’s initiative is to encourage the message of peace year round beginning with “The Campaign of Peace: Kickoff to a Safe Summer” will begin July 2012. This project will take place in the inner cities of Miami-Dade County such as: Little Haiti (Little Haiti Cultural Arts Center), Liberty City (African Heritage cultural Arts Center), Overtown (TBD), Hialeah (TBD), and Miami Gardens (Betty T. Ferguson Center), South Miami (TBD). With the support of local Police officers, business owners, local city officials, we will host Youth Conferences at local community centers. On the agenda: eye-witness encounters of acts of violence, motivational speakers, and skits depicting kids “doing the right thing” when faced with challenges. All Youth Conferences will be concluded with a brief luncheon. The highlight of the summer and the series of Youth Conferences will be the 11th Annual Miami Peace Festival on August 11th, 2012.

The Urban Garden Foundation is soliciting sponsors and donations. Please contact UGF for more information on how you can become involved.

The Miami Peace Festival, formerly the "Peace in the Hood Festival", was created by Demetrius Allen of the Urban Garden Foundation, in honor of DJ Uncle Al. In 2007 the festival's name changed to the Miami Peace Festival to broaden the movement in urban communities towards non-violence and peace.

The Urban Garden Foundation is involved in year-round activities that promote non-violence among the urban youth. The festival promotes a positive message and is a spin-off to The Urban Youth Year-Round activities such as Youth and Peace conferences, workshops, and Teen Clean. The 10th Annual Miami Peace Fest last year, was a huge success! Over 20,000 people from all over South Florida came out to show their support for Miami's Peace Movement.
