How the Home Support Worker Pilot Helps Canadian Families Find Quality In-Home Care Services for their Senior Loved Ones
Canadian families eyeing to get in-home care services for their senior loved ones can rely on the Home Support Worker Pilot of Canadian immigration. From 2017 to 2037, Canada’s senior population is expected to increase by 68%— from 6.2 million to 10.4 million. The number of those ages 75 and over will double. In British Columbia alone, its 2017 population is likely to grow by 2.1 times (Canadian Institute for Health Information 2017).
According to The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (2015), this should not cause an alarm but rather a signal that efforts must be taken so seniors will receive the type of care they need.
It comes as no surprise that the majority of these seniors want to age in place.
The RBC Retirement Myths and Realities survey revealed that 83% of seniors choose to remain at home with the necessary care provided (CBC 2013). But providing in-home care is easier said than done. There are factors that Canadian families must address before this becomes possible.
Access to in-home care is a primary issue because of the caregiver shortage in Canada. The B.C. Care Providers Association revealed that British Columbia is already short of 2,800 caregivers (CBC 2018).
Cost is another concern, particularly with lower-income Canadians who spend more on direct costs and more time caring for aging parents than higher-income earners (CBC 2017).
Both of these factors affect the continuity of care. Care continuity is important as it allows the in-home caregiver to be aware of senior’s health and life histories, as well as community (Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions 2015). With the in-home caregiver providing full-time and continued in-home care services to the senior a relationship is built between them; thereby, improving the quality of care.
Therefore, we can say that fulfilling the in-home care needs of seniors allows them to live in their own homes for as long as possible.
This is where Sure Immigration hopes to do its part in helping the economy of Canada, its families, and most importantly its seniors.
“We help promote the Home Support Worker Pilot of Canadian immigration as it improves the access of Canadian families to in-home care services for their senior loved ones,” said Yehu Levy, Marketing Director for Sure Immigration.
