Add Life to Years Themed World Health Day 2012 at JMA Pilani Rajasthan

Health Organization – WHO.

World Health Day on 07 April marks the founding of the WHO on this very date in 1948 and is an occasion to raise awareness of key global health issues. This year the focus is on Ageing and Health and the theme is “Good Health adds Life to Years.”

Established in the year, 2004 Smt Jamuna Mishra Academy – JMA which has been making rapid strides in early childhood education is presently one among the most sought after schools at Pilani. It is known that on account of better education, health facilities and subsequent increase in life expectancy, the percentage of elderly population i.e. age 60+ has been steadily rising worldwide and also in India. In 200, the elderly population in India was 77 million which was roughly 7% of the total population. By 2050, this number is expected to reach 300 million which would be 17% of the total population. Such an increase is bound to have major implications not only for the Health care System but Society as a whole.

With the concept of nuclear family gaining stronger ground, care for elderly is going to be no ordinary challenge. As it stands, according to estimates, in the elderly population one in every four has depression, one in three have arthritis, one n five having hearing problems apart from a huge number facing vision problems. Further, with life expectancy for women turning out to be more than that of men, India will face a huge number of widows among the elderly population. Compounding this will be the issue of more elderly spread in rural areas which already have problems of quality education and heath care. The burden by Non Communicable Diseases – NCD like heart attacks, cancers, diabetes, mental depression, vision related, hearing impairment etc on the health care system will be of a huge dimension. Ageing is just not about adding years to life but what is important is to add life to years.

Sharing the above details about World Health Day, on 7 Apr 2012, addressing the students and teachers of JMA Pilani, Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan urged the children to love, respect and care for the elderly and conveyed the message of well known alumnus of BITS Pilani Mr Mathew Cherian CEO HelpAge India that with moderation of food, active exercise and a good sense of humor youngsters will indeed be able to add life to years.
