Pilani Rajasthan JMA Celebrates World Sparrow Day - WSD 2012

Starting from the year 2010, the day is celebrated on 20th March across the globe to raise public awareness about the decline of the house sparrow and throw light on the problems faced by the species in its daily fight for survival.

Hometown to the Birla family, Pilani in the heart of Shekhawati region of Rajasthan is well known in India today for various educational institutions, CSIR Laboratory CEERI as well as the upcoming BrahMos Missile Assembly Project unit. Established in the year 2004 Smt Jamuna Mishra Academy – JMA which has been making rapid strides in early childhood education is presently one among the top ranking schools at Pilani Rajasthan. JMA which started with an enrollment of 60 students for the Nursery, LKG, First Junior and Class1 has grown today till Class VIII with well over 500 students presently. JMA is well known in Pilani for its rich tradition of observing various days of national and international importance on a regular basis to increase the global awareness among the enrolled children.

One of the earliest birds one can remember right from childhood is undoubtedly the diminutive house sparrow (Passer domesticus). The association between humans and the house sparrow dates back to several centuries and no other bird has been associated with humans on a daily basis like the house sparrow. It is a bird that evokes fond memories and has thus found mention in folklore and songs from time immemorial. No one has doubt that every language in the world has sparrow songs which have enthralled children for centuries. With their nests dotting almost every house in the neighborhood as well as public places like bus stands and railway stations, the sparrows typically lived in colonies and survived on food grains and tiny worms. Many bird watchers and ornithologists invariably recall with fondness how the house sparrow triggered their passion for observing birds.

Unfortunately, the house sparrow is now a disappearing species. But like all other plants and animals which were once abundant and are now facing an uncertain future, their numbers are also declining across their natural range for a variety of reasons ranging from the destruction of its habitat to lack of insect food for the young and even the increasing microwave pollution from mobile phone towers. Its slow but noticeable disappearance has been labeled as one of the biggest mysteries of recent times thus raising the concern of one and all across the globe.

On the occasion of World Sparrow Day, on 20 Mar 2012 Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan gave a talk highlighting the above details and urged the children to care for these birds by sharing a little food and water in one corner of their homes and give them the status of family members. The children danced and sang various Chidia songs to drive the point that sparrows indeed bring happiness and its our duty not to bring sorrow to them. In this context, its high time for everyone to do their bit with this clarion call “Chirp for the Sparrow Tweet for the Sparrow and House the Sparrow.”
