With over one billion people worldwide suffering from back pain and spinal disability, it has become the biggest cause of disability on the planet. We are living amidst crisis only to realise that prevention and awareness is the key to evade such problems. So because of less accessibility to advanced healthcare, our spine specialistaims to generate awareness about spine health and its effective management on this occasion of world spine day for people through this webinar conducted from Delhi, India, accessible globally.
About the doctor:

Dr.Shishir Kumar, currently heading the dept. of spine surgery in Metro Hospital in Delhi and Noida, India, has more than 13 years of experience in spine surgery. His active contribution in introducing Minimally invasive spine surgery, Scoliosis and Advanced Deformity Correction Surgery in the Armed Forces center can never be overlooked.

He has pushed boundaries, and under his supervision, he visions to make his patients get back to freedom and walk day after surgery. Ages ago, spinal cord surgery was badmouthed by many claiming that it causes more pain that it helps. Few people would recover or benefit from it. But now, with advanced techniques safe spine surgery can now be available at the doorstep of a common man. We assure freedom and recovery to indulge into physical activities post requisite treatment.

What is World Spine Day?

Since 2012, the World Federation of Chiropractic has been co-ordinating World Spine Day in collaboration with organisations around the world. This October 16, 2020 will mark the ninth official World Spine Day.

World Spine day highlights the importance of spinal health and well- being. Promotion of physical activities, good posture, responsible lifting and healthy working conditions will be the highlight of this event. People and patients will be encouraged to look after their spines and stay active.

The theme for 2020 World Spine Day will be BACK ON TRACK. With the challenges this pandemic has thrown at us, leading to less physical activity making people more prone to spinal pain and disability.

The focus of this day is to let people get BACK ON TRACK to revitalise their spines and restore spinal health and freedom. This day aims to lift the global burden of spine painand target patient education by organising and participating in events and initiatives.

Vision & mission of this initiative:

The love for your spine has initiated us to take up this cause to sensitize people on their spinal health. Our spinal cord is the most sensitive part of our body and thus is more susceptible to illnesses and injuries. The decision to consider surgery as the right option only comes after trying non-surgical and “conservative” methods. Most of the spinal disabilities recover from medications or physical therapy(PT). Spinesurgery is mostly the last resort, depending upon the gravity of the case.

Dedicated healthcare professionals are not available worldwide. The population of underprivileged countries has little to no access to good healthcare. So, navigating the challenges of healthcare system can feel a bit like going to medical school. Suddenly learning cornucopia of new medical terms can be mind-boggling. Thus, a well-informed patient is better equipped to advocate his needs and detect medical errors before they endanger your health. So, this initiative invites people from governments, communities, organisations, health professionals or anyone having interest in spinal pain and disability to join hands and get involved.

Some of the hacks to prevent spinal problems include:

• Maintain a healthy diet and weight. Incorporate calcium and vitamin D in your daily diet to prevent osteoporosis.

• Remain active- indulge in physical and recreational activities under the supervision of an expert.

• Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest.

• Warming up or stretching before any workout or physical activity should be a ritual.

• Maintain proper posture.

• Sleep on mattresses of minimum firmness to minimise any curve in your spine.

• Quit smoking or excessive drinking. It impairs blood flow, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation to spinal tissues.

Our spine is an integral part of our central nervous system(CNS) which helps our body function, monitoring the movements. The awareness about spine health and ways to retain its proper health is crucial when there is limited access to healthcare professionals.

This webinar will provide an insight to patients and working professionals alike to keep their spine in good health.
