Irish-only radio station EIREWAVE has recorded a rapid rise in the number of listeners tuning in to its exclusively domestic content.

Eirewave (formerly URadio) was established in 2012, and has recorded a rapid rise in the number of listeners.

The station promises “Today's best Irish Music” by only airing music from homegrown artists, and has quickly increased its audience as it continues “ripping up the rule book”.

Radio listeners bamboozled by the diversity of modern music are seeking refuge in radio stations that restrict the songs they play to one country.

Eirewave reached 427,000 listeners in the second quarter of 2020, a 72 per cent increase year on year, figures released by Infomaniak.

The station, which are available online and digital radios, have pursued a similar strategy to Radio stations abroad which attracts million listeners.

Jack McCarthy, from the station’s programming team said: "Music lovers have enjoyed Irish albums from bands such as U2, The Cranberries, The Coronas, Aslan, Picture This, Sinead O'Connor, Snow Patrol. In 2012, we believed that it was time that these artists had their own radio station – and we have conducted extensive research that supports this proposition too, with both men and women finding the concept favourable. At its core, Eirewave is a showcase of Irish contemporary music – firstly in music, but ultimately for all the music lovers. Eirewave focuses on Irish talent, aiming to promote new and upcoming Irish artists in the growing Irish Music Industry. 650 Irish Artists have uploaded their profile on eirewave.ie to date.
