Luisenstad canal

Luisenstad canal

Tour guide Cliewe Juritza is offering a new tour through Berlin-Kreuzberg. The tour starts at Ostbahnhof (East-station) and follows the former Luisenstad canal to the former border crossing point Heinrich-Heine-Straße.
This part of the town was named after the Prussian queen Luise – the Luisenstad was once a suburb of Berlin and today in the very centre of the city. After the erection of the Berlin Wall, the Luisenstadt became a suburb again, a suburb of West-Berlin, directly behind the Wall. The new name of this part of town became Kreuzberg SO 36 – the post code of this area.
The Berlin Wall divided the city and the Berliners. At the same time, gardens and alternative ways of living could develop in the shadow of the Wall on the western side – an unalluring place for investors and the upper class. Till the day of today, the former border area offers space for underdog and alternative art, culture and gardening. But, now that the Wall has gone, the pressure on this non-commercial use of scare space in a densely populated city is growing.
On this tour you can see prefabricated flats opposite of exclusive living condominiums and Wilhelminian style houses. There are nice and cozy coffee houses near old-fashioned typical Berlin bear taverns. Is this an easy going quarter or a social hotspot? An exciting tour through a fascinating part of Berlin.
This tour is scheduled individually for private tours and group tours. More information and appointments on ++49 179 47 29 007 or on

I was born in 1966 in East-Berlin and grew up and went to school in Prenzlauer Berg (Helmholtzkiez). After some fruitless attempts to escape from the GDR, I was arrested in 1984 and sentenced to twelve month in prison. Ten month later I was bought to freedom by the Federal Republic of Germany and released from the GDR. During my study political sciences in West-Berlin, the Berlin Wall came down in November 1989. Until the mid 1990ies I worked for the Berlin Senate of Urban Development and organized architectural invitations to tender, e.g. the competition of the chancellery and the federal presidents' office. I worked as a free lance journalist and in the press department of McDonald’s Germany. Since January 2007 I am a tour guide in Berlin, offering individual private tours.

He was sentenced to 12 month in prison and was able to leave jail after 10 month – the Federal Republic of Germany had paid money for his release. He lived in West-Berlin when the Wall fell. Today
