Proud to be BITSian Dr Shiva Prasad Distinguished Professor UFCG Federal University of Campina Grande Brazilian Odyssey
UFCG honored him on retirement by putting his name on a newly built Chemical Engineering block. He was the only Titular (Distinguished) Professor in the Chemical Engineering Dept as nobody else qualified for the same. Even after retirement, the Brazilian Government appointed him as National Senior Visiting Professor to strengthen a research group at a newly created campus of the University. After that he was appointed for 3 years to spearhead Regional Scientific Development. His research lab is still continuing at the new campus and that lab is also destined to carry his name when the building construction is completed.
Dr Shiva Prasad from the worlds's largest open air art gallery Shekhawati in Rajasthan did his BSc and MSc Chemistry (1956 - 1962) from erstwhile Birla Science College Pilani which was shaping up to become Birla Institute of Technology and Science BITS Pilani which is an institution of eminence in India today. He took up teaching at Chamaria Postgraduate College Fatehpur and then shifted to teaching at Agrawal College Jaipur and pursued his PhD from MREC which is known today as MNIT Jaipur. He completed his PhD from University of Rajasthan in 1970.
He started working in June 1978 in UFPB (Federal University of Paraiba) Campus II at Campina Grande city Brazil which was raised to a separate university, UFCG (Federal University of Campina Grande) in 2002 and continues his role there as a visiting professor. With a scholarship from National Counsel for Scientific and Technological Development, Ministry of Sciences and Technology, Brazil (CNPq) he carried out post doctoral work at State University of New York, SUNY, Buffalo, United States
with Prof. Janeth G. Osteryoung (91-92) and with with Prof.Stanley Brukenstein (95-96).
Dr Prasad's areas of expertise include Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Electro analytical and Electrochemistry, Corrosion and Protection, Chemical Technology and Engineering Chemistry and Environment. In 1979 he was awarded Research Scientist, Category 1-A (the highest category) by Ministry of Sciences and Technology, Brazil) and in 2010 as National Senior Professo by Ministry of Education, Brazil.
Dr Prasad's awesome credentials include 153 Articles published in peer reviewed scientific journals, 5 books and 444 Papers published in proceedings of scientific events. Apart from English and Hindi, Dr Prasad today is fluent with Portuguese and Spanish. Presently he is at Jaipur India and takes active part in all BITSAA Jaipur events. This 80 year young at heart man when asked how the odyssey with Brazil in South America happen, with a cool as cucumber smile he says when you start with Pilani, things start happening and in fact anything can happen!!
