Bavarian Inn Restaurant Matriarch Begins Blogging

Frankenmuth, MI – Oct. 12, 2011 – In December, Dorothy Zehnder will turn 90, and she’s begun celebrating by sharing her favorite stories in a weekly blog called, “From Scratch.”
“People are always asking me the most interesting questions about my life, cooking, the restaurant and about our family,” Dorothy said. “After this many years, I’ve realized I have a lot to share.”
Just like her recently released book, “Come Cook With Me,” Dorothy’s blog will concentrate on her nearly 63 years with the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. Additionally, Dorothy will write about cooking, her home state of Michigan, her ever-growing family and her favorite stories.
While many nonagenarians are suffering the limitations of old age, Dorothy is still in the kitchen of Bavarian Inn 10 hours a day, six days a week, with no plans to retire. In the blog, she'll talk about her role as teacher, role model, philanthropist, corporate citizen and mom.
“It is fun to look back and remember fondly building the business and watching the kids grow up,” Dorothy said. “Now I have three generations in business with me. They encourage me to share my memories, my knowledge and my enthusiasm for business. And cooking – I know a thing or two about cooking.”

Earlier this year, Dorothy released her much anticipated cookbook -- an 80-year collection of recipes, wisdom and memories. “Come Cook With Me” is brimming with some 290 recipes and rich stories of Dorothy’s years at the Bavarian Inn.
Not only is Dorothy in charge of one of the nation’s most successful restaurants, she oversees the family’s entire business operations -- Castle Shops, River Place Shops, Bavarian Inn Lodge and a specialty line of food products.
An average day for Dorothy? She says there’s nothing she doesn’t do: food preparation, ordering, quality control, cleanliness, production systems, developing new menu items, promotion and marketing. And now, writing a blog.
“When I wander through the dining rooms, I’m flooded with decades of memories,” she said. “Today we’re serving the children and grandchildren of our original customers. I feel deeply gratified that I can continue to share my family’s legacy in new and relevant ways.”
“Come Cook With Me” is filled with beautiful photos and narratives, starting with Dorothy’s early childhood memories on her parents’ farm, her 62-year marriage and growing family, and the demanding task of bringing the Bavarian Inn into the 21st century.
