Bon Magazine Spring – summer issue 2011 by Other Edition Newsstand

Press release from: Other Edition

Bon has established itself as Sweden’s leading international fashion and culture magazine.
Bon’s Spring-summer is a cool and calm affair, marked out in seasonal pastels and chilled tones. There is a conceptual attempt to create a kind of cohesion in the fashion coverage by arranging the entire fashion stories one after each other, connecting them with text as if each were part of a single discussion, a long fashion essay as it were. Given that Bon has a very specific aesthetic for its fashion shoots, this certainly feels consistent. Whether the intersecting texts are actually as insightful (or necessary) as they appear to think they are or ultimately merely a graphic design intervention is more open to debate. Either way, however, it remains a kind of grand thematic gesture that is becoming more and rarer these days, even in niche fashion publications, as many adjust their style to bow to commercial pressures.

This directional approach also reduces the immediate visibility of individual photographers undertaking shoots for the title and the very precise aesthetic pursued throughout means that some seem to fade into the overall picture. Others, such as Ben Weller and his crisp monochrome ‘Dancing in the Dark’ shoot, somehow still jump out of the modulated field.

Fashion is, of course, only one of the subjects that Bon covers. Art, for example gets a chunky and well-rounded coverage that includes Freire Barnes personal tour around works on show at the Venice Biennale that grabbed her attention, Daniel Birnbaum’s insights onto the weighty responsibility of buying art for Tate Modern’s collection and the almost inevitable coverage of Steven Shearer, the Canadian artist whose work speaks loudly to teenagers of all ages. And the magazine’s regular section of interviews also offers diverse fare: everything from lofty fashion pundit’s insights into the state of fashion now, to an interview with hip American designer Phillip Lim and Stephen Burrows waxing lyrical on the essence of the real seventies.
