WSD11 World Sight Day at Shridhar University Pilani Rajasthan

The reputation of a university is not only based on admission and placement records but also on its Social Engineering activities such as blood donation, eye donation etc to make the world at large a better place to live.

India today which is one of the fastest growing economies in the world also is home to one-fourth of the world's blind population. What is even more shocking is the fact that even though there were about 9,500,000 deaths a year back in India, only 10,000 of them actually had donated their eyes. There are over 4.5 million visually challenged persons in India and doctors feel that at least three million can gain their sight through cornea transplant.

Online pledging of eyes have been facilitated by many organizations including Bharat Eye Bank http://www.bharateyebank.org/ which is a Mission with Passion by BharatMatrimony Group which is the world's most successful matrimony website and the distinction of being the first matrimony brand to cross 1 lakh fans on Facebook in addition to its 25,000 followers in Twitter.

World Sight Day (WSD) is an international day of awareness, held annually on the second Thursday of October to focus attention on the global issue of avoidable blindness and visual impairment. For the year 2011, it is on October 13. VISION 2020 is the global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness, a joint programme of the World Health Organization – WHO and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness - IAPB with an international membership of NGOs, professional associations, eye care institutions and corporations.

WHO Fact sheet says “About 284 million people are visually impaired worldwide: 39 million are blind and 245 have low vision. About 90% of the world's visually impaired live in developing countries. Globally, uncorrected refractive errors are the main cause of visual impairment but in middle and low-income countries cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness. 80% of all visual impairment can be avoided or cured. The number of people visually impaired from infectious diseases has greatly reduced in the last 20 years.”

On October 13 which is observed as World Sight Day – WSD 11, Prof BR Natarajan Pro Vice Chancellor addressed the faculty and students of Shridhar University Pilani Rajasthan and briefed them on the importance of eye donation including various facts about eye donation. He also urged them to become sight ambassadors to spread awareness about eye donation as well as make eye donation a family tradition. Prof Natarajan also addressed the teachers and students of the Government Girls Secondary School located at Brahmano Ki Dhani village who were on a visit to the University about the importance of eye donation.
