National Shed Week celebrates sheds with under floor heating

National Shed Week recently took place, where all different kinds of shed were celebrated- from those which are ultra luxurious fitted with under floor heating such as electric underfloor heating to the completely wild and wacky!

There seems to be an unrivalled bond between British folk and their garden sheds- part mystical, part practical and predominately inexplicable. While some people view their sheds as a place to escape the tedium of reality at the bottom of their gardens, others as evidence of the days when human kind used to dwell in caves, while others view the humble shed as a place to assemble flat pack furniture.
However, while the shed used to be just a place to store your tools evidence is pointing out that more things are now being done in sheds than ever before. The humble shed, along with all of its crazy and obscure relatives were recently celebrated in all their glory during National Shed Week.

Last year, the shed which took the prize of shed of the year was awarded to a man living in Essex- namely Southend-On-sea who had created a Caribbean pirates lair out of a lot of spare planks of wood. The unique shed was assembled at the back of the man’s house and was completed with tropical plants, rum barrels and even ships rigging, cannons and for a final touch, a parrot!

The organiser of the competition, named Andrew Wilcox, a graphic designer from Cardiff has said "There was a time when there was basically only one type of shed, "But that's certainly not the case any more. People are now using them as pubs, cinemas, temples and smoking dens. At the moment it's trendy to have an eco-shed with solar panels."

Some of the sheds that were entered into this year’s competition included the hemispherical "hobbit" shed which was built by one competitor from Somerset. This revolutionary shed was made from the bottom part of a glass fibre cesspit tank, while the top was a neon-lit replica of an American diner complete with vibrant red leather seats, a jukebox and even a soda fountain!

Recent statistics have shown that more British people own sheds than anywhere else in the world, with around 11.5 domestic sheds built in the Uk. And it’s estimated that as a nation we collectively spend over 60 million hours per week inside them. Those who are passionate about their sheds express that spending time in their sheds fills them with a sense of calm and intimacy from just being at one in their sheds.
