RAY is coming: In 2012 Frankfurt/RheinMain will celebrate

Art Collection Deutsche Börse, DZ BANK Kunstsammlung, Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie, Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, Frankfurter Kunstverein, MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main, and Städel Museum have joined forces at the initiative of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain to produce the new triennial of photography, called “RAY Fotografieprojekte Frankfurt/RheinMain”.

RAY will be launched in April 2012 with a main, central exhibition, which together with other partner exhibitions and projects through October 2012 will shed light on new trends in the international world of photography. The main exhibition will be the responsibility of a curatorial team comprised of Anne-Marie Beckmann (Art Collection Deutsche Börse), Lilian Engelmann (Frankfurter Kunstverein), Peter Gorschlüter (MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main), Dr. Holger Kube Ventura (Frankfurter Kunstverein), Alexandra Lechner (Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie), and Celina Lunsford (Fotografie Forum Frankfurt).

For 200 days, the Rhine-Main region will host the presentation, discovery, and discussion of outstanding positions in photography and video. The thread running through all the exhibitions and events is the concept of time in photography today. Which twentieth-century visual traditions have remained relevant for art photography and video today? How do current artistic images reflect new developments and paradoxes? And what does the past mean to the present day of images? These are some of the questions “RAY 2012” will seek to explore.

The region Frankfurt/Rhine-Main has a high density of international recognized institutions in the field of contemporary photography, including renowned collections and institutions for education and exhibition. This potential will be realized by “RAY Fotografieprojekte Frankfurt/RheinMain”, which will be repeated every few years.

Luminita Sabau, RAY’s spokesperson, says of the project: “Frankfurt and photography—a history with a long tradition is now taking shape. The fact that so many high-quality partners have come together promises an interesting discussion as well as concentrated power for a medium that is constantly reinventing itself. In the future the region Frankfurt/Rhine-Main will be firmly established as a center for photography on the international map of important cities for art and culture.”

This project is an initiative of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain and is funded by it. RAY 2012 is a cooperation between Art Collection Deutsche Börse, Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie, DZ BANK Kunstsammlung, Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, Frankfurter Kunstverein, MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main, and Städel Museum.
